2023. DEVOTION
Drawing and painting have been one constant on his highly changeful life. As a boy, he used charcoal to draw simple images on anything he could find. The young Keomingmuang also spent part of his childhood playing near a temple where monks performed rituals, and it was here that he found himself attracted to the paper or cloth images of Buddha that surrounded him. For a time, he supported himself by selling Buddhist drawings in the temple. Even throughout his days in the jungle as a soldier of the liberation army, he continued to cultivate his artistic abilities. It was only much later that KEOMINGMUANG purposed a conventional artistic education by attending and graduating from the institute of Fine Arts in Hanoi Vietnam. KEOMINGMUANG's works are inspired by early memories of Buddhist images, fond recollections from childhood and a strong sense of the poverty that he suffered. His works like Hmong's New Year (1999), a scene of tribal folk in traditional attire welcoming the New Year with dance, is set against the backdrop of lively, swaying trees. It betrays the artist's belief in the close relationship people and nature, and is a palpable manifestation of his past. His recent works, such as Cows in Metamorphose (2003) and Daily food (2002) continue an oeuvre suffused with vibrant almost kaleidoscopic, color and maintain clear identification (2001) hint of the artist's growing development as a social commentator. The montage of industrial chaos and animals in flight or distress a poignant elucidation of difficult times. Previously a Director and Teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Vientiane, Laos PDR and a Chief of the Fine Art Department, Ministry of information and Culture, Vientiane, Laos PDR, KEOMINGMUANG now devotes his time to being a fulltime freelance artist in Vientiane, Laos PDR.

On the eve of Lao revolution, Hongsa was born in 1975 in Ban Phonethan Neua, Xaysettha District in Vientiane. A locally trained and regionally influenced artist, Hongsa’s classic watercolors, oil and charcoal drawings are heavily influenced by Thai contemporary artist, Ajarn Savai. “I capture Lao women, and their relationship with children. In Laos, nothing is more beautiful than this”, he shared.
Hongsa’s work is well known within the Lao contemporary art community for capturing playful yet potent images of Akha women from Luang-Namtha in the northern most regions of Lao PDR. Each of Hongsa’s paintings tells the life of individual women from ethnic minorities to urban Vientiane mothers, promoting a deeper understanding of gender equality.
